In his influential book Democracy Across Borders: From Dêmos to Dêmoi (2007), James Bohman argues that current political conditions require a change not only of its institutional form but also of its political subject. In the first 2010 special issue of Ethics & Global Politics published today (Feb 5), Bohman presents his basic thoughts on a republican approach to transnational democracy, and also replies to four critical responses, bringing out strengths and weaknesses of his innovative view of democracy across borders. .
