Online Guide to Open Access Journals Publishing

Co-Action Publishing and Lund University Library, Head Office launched the Online Guide to Open Access Journals Publishing on February 5 2010. The online guide is directed to small independent teams and provides practical information on planning, setting up, launching, publishing and managing an open access scholarly journal. Users can take advantage of additional resources in the form of links to related information, samples of applied practices and downloadable tools that can be adapted. The guide seeks to be interactive, allowing users to share their own best practices, tips and suggestions through a comment field. Although the guide contains some information that is specific to the Nordic region, most of its content can be applied internationally.

Development of the Online Guide to Open Access Journals Publishing was generously supported by the Swedish Royal Library through its OpenAccess.se Program The technical solution received support from the Nordbib Program; through cooperation with the project “Aiding Scientific Journals Towards Open Access Publishing”. The full press release is available here.

Co-Action Publishing works with Lund University Library

Co-Action Publishing and Lund University Library, Head Office, have been awarded substantial funding from the Swedish Royal Library through its OpenAccess.se Program to create a Best Practices Guide to Open Access Journals Publishing. The project aims to create a comprehensive, electronically available guide that addresses key issues for editors, researchers, librarians and university presses who are considering an Open Access publishing venture. Information and experiences will be systematically collected and then presented in a format that allows others to apply the lessons learned. Input to the guide will be collected through interviews with editors and presses. Additionally, the guide will be informed by existing literature on specific areas of OA journals publishing and will take into account reports from relevant projects that have earlier received funding from the Swedish national OA Program and the Nordbib Program; in particular the guide will build on the Nordbib-funded project, “Aiding Scientific Journals Towards Open Access Publishing”.

The final version of the Guide will be available by 1 January 2010. Input from editors, researchers, presses and others is welcomed! Please contact Project Manager Caroline Sutton at projects@co-action.net.

Co-Action Publishing works with Peter Suber

Peter Suber (Faculty Fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center, Special Advisor at Harvard's Office for Scholarly Communication, Senior Researcher at SPARC, Open Access Project Director at Public Knowledge, Research Professor of Philosophy at Earlham College, and co-founder of the Open Access Directory) and Co-Action Publishing’s Caroline Sutton (Publisher) teamed up in 2007 to collate information on the experiences of scholarly societies who are affiliated with Open Access or Hybrid OA journals.

The initial list included the journals themselves as well as the societies, and was published on November 2, 2007 HERE. A description and discussion of the results was published by Suber & Sutton in the November issue of SOAN.

The full Open Access journals list in now being offered in a Google Spreadsheet and Suber and Sutton invite the community to correct and expand it.
