People – Martin Bergö
In tough competition with nearly 10,000 other young European researchers, Martin Bergö, Associate Professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy at Göteborg University, Sweden, has won a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The sum is 16 million Swedish kronor (ca USD 2.500,000), to be used for studies on cancer and accelerated ageing. ”This grant means that we are regarded as occupying the absolute cutting edge of European research in our field”, says Professor Bergö. Interestingly, most of the articles published by Professor Bergö and his teams are Open Access. Co-Action Publishing asked him if this was a conscious choice on his part. He admits that he has never previously pondered the question whether to submit an article to an OA journal or not, but that he has been pleased when for instance PNAS has made the articles freely available online. ”Today I’m all for Open Access” Professor Bergö says, ”and I’m considering submitting a new study to PLoS Biology”.
We also asked if in the ERC Starting Grant there were any stipulations as to Open Access publishing of the results coming out of the funded research. ”I have not yet seen any such requirement,” says Professor Bergö, ”however, it is an interesting thought!”
